Synopsis:

YAKSHAGANA (pronounced Yaxa- Gaana, which literally means “Celestial Singing”) is a unique theater art form from India. It uses a unique technique of storytelling in which music, dancing, acting, dialogues and costumes all play an equal role. The style of music, dance and even the dialogue delivery style are unique. Yakshagana originated as a folk theatre in Karnataka state in India about 800 years ago and has developed into a main stream theater form in south India.   It is a unique harmony of musical tradition, eye-catching costumes and make-up, and authentic styles of dance, improvised gestures and acting with its extemporaneous dialogue appealing to a wide range of the community. Yakshagana is a vibrant, vigorous living form of theatre art.
